Bouleuterion

It was in this buil1ing that the Senate convened. In front of the auditorium, which could accommodate 1,500, lay a courtyard surrounded on three sides by porticos and with a tomb or altar in the centre.

According to an inscription later found among the ruins, the monument was built by Timarches and Heracleidas in 175 and 164 B.C. and dedicated to the Seleucid King Antiochus IV Epiphane. One of the two buildings to the right of the bouleuterion may have belonged the cult of Asclepius, one of the most important of the imperial cults. On the aouth stands the Temple of Serapis.
