Lower Gymnasium

Located at the western end of the stadium., the lower gymnasium is entered through a propylon or monumental entrance. The central courtyard is in the form of a palaestra, with doric porticos on three sides. In the middle of the north side was the ephebeum, which served as a lecture-room for students and where can still be seen carved on the walls the names of the students who once attended lectures here. The other rooms were used for physical education. There is also a wash-place with basins into which water flows from spouts in the form of lions' heads. On the far right, beside the door, there is an altar dedicated to Kybele. This was visited by a great many of the poor and destitute, who were also responsible for its maintenance.
