Sacred Gate

This gate, known to the local inhabitants as the Iron Gate, forms part of a city defence wall dating from the 5th century B. C. and restored by the Emperor Trajan (98-117 A. D.).

According to one of the inscriptions found here dating from 100 B.C. it gave access to the Sacred Way which led from the Delphinion and the Lion Harbour to the Temple of Apollo at Didyma.
